Residual Records

Logo sketches. Nothing really came of anything here.

Project: Logotype

Residual Records' owner Austen Murray had a pretty strong idea for the logo he wanted, which was back to back R's.  I felt the idea was strong, but too obvious and through a series of proposals I tried to change his mind, and my own thinking to produce something better.  Something that was unique and meant more than basic initials.

First I "sketched" various logos in black and white.  Had some ideas about the back to back R's forming a record, but it didn't work out, really.

Cleaner..what you'd expect a record label logo to look like.

As things progressed I tried assigning a color to the process.  I also went with a cleaner, more classic look to the logo.  This is more in line with my personal design taste.  These looked cleaner, felt more on-track and got good responses from colleagues, but they didn't seem to have enough "Flavor" for a predominantly hip-hop record label.

My final idea came from playing with incorporating the circular "record" shape into the letter R.  This worked pretty well, and gave an anthropomorphic appearance of a person with headphones facing right.  To emphasize this I included an upright rectangle that, I think, reads like headphones, a record tonearm, and a radio antenna, all within the letter R.  The word balloon below is used to emphasize the anthropomorphic aspect of the design.

What is This?

My name is Josh Divine, and I am the man behind Program2 Illustration and Design.  Here, I'm going through my process for my own benefit, for my clients, and for the benefit of other designers.  I am too humble to suggest that anyone could learn anything from me, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Enjoy!

This site uses web fonts from The League of Movable Type and typekit.
Web fonts are a relatively new idea, but a very exciting one.  There are reports that they don't render well on all browsers.   IE8, Newer Safari, Firefox and Opera 10 should be fine. If that is not the case for you, please let me know!
