Susan Wechsler

Susan's old site, based on a Flash template.

Project: Site Revamp + Identity

Susan is an amazing artist, and her old website just wasn't cutting it.  She came to me because she wanted something new.  Her concerns were that the images were too small, and that the site was too feminine in appearance.  I completely agreed.  After seeing Susan's work in person it was clear that it wasn't being represented properly.  Susan's work is HUGE, and deals with big ideas and on themes that are elemental.   The challenge for me was going to be making the pieces seem as huge and alive on a small computer screen, as they did in her studio.

Susan's old site was made with a Flash template.  Basically, you fill in the blanks. Images go here, text goes there, and you can customize the background colors if you want.  Easy if you're a designer, but this means that visitors have to wait for the entire site to load before seeing it, and (in this case) they have to view the work and information in a format that is completely unsuited to the content.  It also makes updating the site very difficult.

Preliminary Ideas

Visual Proposal #1

My first plan involved a larger space for the images, a larger but less distracting space for text, and a detail image that would enlarge when clicked to show the intricacies of the pieces. I used a grid and measurements from the Golden Ratio to keep things looking organized.

I put the images on a warm, concrete background to give things that earthy, elemental quality found in Susan's Work.  This was already a big improvement in my eyes, but I still felt like the images seemed constrained, something I didn't like about the original site's mosaic border.   The client didn't like the abstract shape in the bottom right, either, and I couldn't justify it being there so away it went!

Visual Proposal #2

I blew the image up until it "burst out" of it's container.  This left a nice "tab" for text and details to sit on.  This layout left no mistake that the images were important, and it made them look larger and more powerful.  I liked this, but found placing this image on a white background looked too clinical.  I went to see Susan's work at NCAR in Boulder.  Her work was hung on a warm, textured concrete.  Susan loved it and I thought it looked great.  I took some photos of this surface and used it as a background texture for the entire site.

With the images taking such a primary role, everything else had to be minimal.  I set the navigation above and to the right with no graphics or interactive effects.  Within the specific galleries I used the same no-frills navigational system.

Implementation

Susan's New Site

As things progressed, some details were changed from the visual proposals.  The smaller tab on the left was removed to make things easier to lay out via CSS.  The right side tab was widened to handle more info about the individual pieces.  Detail images were made much smaller, and moved to the upper right at the client's request.  The custom templates with custom HTML and CSS were set up in TYPO3.

Each gallery was given its own background.  These were made up of photos I had taken layered on top of one another.  The site ended up with about 100 individual pages, all created within the TYPO3 CMS.

Visit the finished site here, and let Susan know what you think of her work!

Notes on the Site

This site uses web fonts from The League of Movable Type and typekit.
Web fonts are a relatively new idea, but a very exciting one.  There are reports that they don't render well on all browsers.   IE8, Newer Safari, Firefox and Opera 10 should be fine. If that is not the case for you, please let me know!

This site was built with the TYPO3 CMS and elements of Greg Remington's Zen Wireframe for TYPO3.
